Fixed-price "quote"-based approach
If you require it, I'll be glad to draw up a fixed price for your project, so that you can decide if you can afford it before we commence. I do this by analysing your requirements in depth in order to estimate the total time it would take me to complete the work. I then apply the relevant hourly rate (see here) to produce the total price. Once I have priced a job, I will stick to that price as long as your requirements do not change.
This obviously has the major advantage that you know in advance how much your bill is going to be if you decide to go ahead. If you’d prefer this approach, the following should be noted (see full T&Cs):
1. With any initial contact or enquiry I will allow a total of 2 hours for dispensing with the usual formalities and getting a rough overview of your requirements and current situation. These first 2 hours will not be charged, unless it turns out you are simply "picking my brains" with no intention of actually hiring me.
2. In order properly to analyse your requirements and provide the costing you require, I may require access to the FTP area of your web site if you already have one. Otherwise I may be unable fully to assess the work in the context of all your existing scripts and functionality. If it becomes apparent that I require these details at an early stage, you should feel free to request a signed NDA at any point.
3. Just like a plumber, mechanic or solicitor, the commodity I am selling is my time as a professional. When I produce a binding quotation it will include - minus the first 2 hours - the time already spent discussing your requirements in depth, investigating your needs in the context of your existing web deployment, and drawing up the analysis and quotation itself. Usually the initial free 2 hours is sufficient to cover this overhead, but for complex analyses it can sometimes be as much as 4 hours. I guarantee that this 'quotation fee' will not be any more than 4 hours. But should you decide not to commission the work at that price I will invoice you for this time already spent working for you.
